News and Updates from Track & Trail PublicationsCorrection We don’t know how it happened, but on page 112, in our book Exploring the Sierra Vista National Scenic Byway, we have an incorrect GPS coordinate for the stopping place on Forest Road 6S08 when visiting the World War II crash site of a P-40 fighter aircraft. The correct coordinates should be: N37°34.565 / W119°32.490. We apologize for any confusion our incorrect coordinates might have caused. An apology to our readers In recent months we have had a number of inquires about our next two forthcoming books; High Sierra SUV Trails, Volume IV – The Southern End, and Great Basin SUV Trails Volume III- Western Nevada. Let not your hearts be troubled dear readers. The High Sierra book will be released later this year. We promise! We are projecting a summer 2009 release date for the third in our Nevada series. The reason for the delay is that our principal writers, Roger and Loris Mitchell, temporarily abandoned their domestic writing duties for a journey to El Fin del Mundo, (the end of the earth). Last heard from they had just left the far south of Chile, past Tierra del Fuego in Argentina (at the very tip of South America), and on to the Falkland Islands, easily the most remote corner of the British Empire.Several photos were included in their last e-mail:
Scenery in the Southern Andes
Four-wheeling in the Falkland Islands
Future Track & Trail books in the production pipeline: High Sierra SUV Trails, Volume IV – The Far South Country (2008) A Few Jeep Trail books from La Siesta Press are still available! Track and Trail Publications has a very few of Roger Mitchell’s old books for sale! We have less than a half a dozen of each title for sale, so if you want any of these classics for your collection, you had best send for these ASAP. Because of the limited supply please do not order more than one copy of any single title. Please specify if the want the book(s) ordered to be autographed by the author. Keep in mind however, these little guides are 30-40 years old and some of the information is out of date. Death Valley Jeep Trails a 36-page guide to 17 jeep trails in Death Valley National Monument, as they existed in 1969 when this book was published. This book is a 1993 revision and reprint of the original book. The National Monument was greatly expanded and up-graded to a National Park in 1994, with more than 95% classified as “Wilderness”. Of the 17 routes originally described, only ten are still open today (but those are relatively little unchanged during the last 40 years). Be aware however, the status of several of these routes drastically changed with the passage of the so-called “Desert Protection Act” in 1994. The jeep trails to Greenwater Canyon, Pinto Peak, and Wingate Wash, were closed completely when the area was designated as Wilderness. The road going up Surprise Canyon to Panamint City was officially closed in 2001, after three Green Advocacy Groups sued the BLM claiming environmental damage was being done to the riparian habitat. Further, the roads into Trail, Hall, and Lemoigne Canyons no longer go as far as they once did. Needless to say, for four-wheelers, this little book is a good guide to what we have lost, as much as what trails still exist today. Our price: $8.00 + any applicable California sales tax and $2.50 shipping for one book, plus $1.25 shipping for each additional book. Inyo-Mono Jeep Trails, a 36-page guidebook to jeep trails in Inyo and Mono County. This is a 1991 reprint of a book originally published in 1969. Of the 18 four-wheel drive routes described, only two are closed today, (Indian Garden and Furnace Creeks) with another trail cut in two by a rockslide (Westgard Mine). Our price: $7.50 + any applicable California sales tax and $2.50 shipping for one book, plus $1.25 shipping for each additional book. Eastern Sierra Jeep Trails, a 36-page guidebook to jeep trails along the crest of the Sierra Nevada. This is a 1992 reprint of a book originally published in 19__. Of the 10 four-wheel drive routes described, only the Rockhouse Basin trail to Woodpecker Meadow is closed. The Wolf Creek area was logged off in the 1970s, turning the 4x4 trail into a high standard gravel road. Our price: $7.50 + any applicable California sales tax and $2.50 shipping, plus $1.25 shipping for each additional book. Because of the very limited number being available, these titles do not appear on our regular Order Form. If you want one, we suggest you first call us at (559) 683-6984 and inquire about current availability. We have so few we expect them to sell fast as they are collector’s items. Please advise us if you want one autographed by the author. This website was last updated on May 23, 2008 Back To Top |
